Not every sick tree needs to come down. Emerald ash borer has been confirmed in Westminster, Broomfield, and Thornton, and every ash in Northglenn is now in its path. The signs are a thinning crown that starts at the top, D shaped exit holes about an eighth of an inch across in the bark, S shaped tunnels under bark that is starting to split, and woodpecker damage where the birds are digging for larvae. An ash with early damage and most of its crown intact can be protected with trunk injections repeated every two to three years. That treatment requires a Colorado commercial pesticide applicator license, so we coordinate it through a licensed applicator partner we have referred customers to before, and we handle the assessment, any deadwood pruning, and the removal if the tree is too far gone. Ash borer is the headline, but the north metro has other problems that take trees: Cytospora canker on blue spruce, which shows as dead branches from the bottom up and resin bleeding on the trunk; ips beetles in stressed pines; fire blight on crab apples and ornamental pears, where shoots blacken and curl like a shepherd’s crook; and drought stress that opens the door to all of it. Our part of the job is the diagnosis and the cutting: pruning out cankered limbs and fire blight strikes with sterilized tools, removing deadwood that is harboring beetles, and taking the whole tree if it is beyond help. Where a spray or injection is the right answer, we bring in a licensed applicator rather than guess with a product from the hardware store. The natural follow on to a removal is a new tree, and the right choice planted the right way will outlive the mistakes that got the last one taken down. We plant balled and burlapped and container trees, set at the correct depth with the root flare visible, staked only if the site needs it, mulched in a wide ring that stays off the trunk, and watered in. For Northglenn’s clay soil, dry summers, and wet spring snow, we lean toward Kentucky coffeetree, hackberry, bur oak, honeylocust, and catalpa for shade, and serviceberry or hawthorn for tight yards, and we steer people away from ash, silver maple, and Siberian elm. If it still has most of its canopy and the borer damage is early, often yes, with injections repeated on a schedule. If it has lost more than about a third of the crown, the honest answer is usually removal. We will tell you which one it is after we look.
