Pruning goes a step further than basic trimming. Crown thinning removes selective branches from inside the canopy to let more light and air through, which matters on the dense cottonwoods and elms that dominate older Northglenn yards. Crown raising removes the lower limbs to clear space under the tree for a driveway, a sidewalk, or a lawn that has gone patchy in the shade. Dead branches inside the canopy are a liability. They fall without warning, and they are heavier than they look. Hedges need regular attention to stay dense and well defined. We trim hedges to a clean line, keep the base slightly wider than the top so the lower growth still gets light, and remove the cuttings. Whether it is a formal boxwood hedge, a privet row along a fence line, or a cotoneaster screen between you and the neighbor, we can work it into a scheduled visit. Hedges in the north metro usually want two cuts a year, one in late spring after the first flush and one in mid summer. Overgrown hedges that have not been cut in years can often be brought back over two seasons rather than replaced.
Branches rubbing on or hanging over a roof cause shingle damage, clog gutters, and give squirrels and raccoons an easy path onto the house. We clear roof and structure clearances as part of standard trimming work, typically six to ten feet off the roofline depending on the species and how fast it grows back. Service drops and other lines on your property get the same careful clearance work. If branches are in contact with energized utility lines, that work falls under Xcel Energy’s jurisdiction and we will let you know so you can call them first. Do not try to clear a line yourself.
In Colorado’s climate, late winter to early spring, before new growth starts, is usually the best window for most deciduous trees. It is easier to see the branch structure without leaves, and the tree channels its spring energy into the remaining branches. Summer trimming is fine for hazard removal and clearance work.
