Cottonwood, aspen, Siberian elm, crabapple, and lilac are the worst offenders in the north metro, and a single tree can throw up dozens of them across a yard in one summer. We cut them flush and pull what we can, including the volunteer elm and cottonwood sprouts that fill in along fence lines and ditches if nobody stops them. Suckers coming off live roots will try again, so cutting them each season keeps them under control. If the source is an old stump, stump grinding ends the problem for good.
